I was just 18 years old in 1984. Between my freshman and sophomore years of college,
I had no prospects, no skills, but lots of motivation to work hard. Pell Grants and
loans didn't cover the costs of a college education; my mom earned less than the cost
of my tuition. Financial help from home was simply not an option.
