We read with interest the excellent article by Seo and colleagues reporting a 10-year
relative survival rate of patients with Parkinson's disease using a nationwide database.
1
It was clearly demonstrated that individuals with this disease have a lower survival
rate than the general population even during the early stages of the disease.
1
Thus, the authors appropriately suggest that improvements in clinical practice and
detection of pertinent causes of death may be useful in preventing premature death
among patients with Parkinson's disease.
1
Despite the enormous clinical and epidemiologic relevance of this study,
1
we also consider it pertinent to evaluate the role of possible cases of sudden death
in reducing the relative survival rates in Parkinson's disease, considered the forefront
of medical care in the last years.
