A 30-day unintended hospital readmission can be an important quality indicator for
hospitals and SARs. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) created the
Hospital Readmission Reduction Program. This program directs CMS to decrease payments
to hospitals with high readmission rates for patients admitted with pneumonia who
surpass the national average of 20%.
